Music Musicals Suggestions?

I am really into musicals, but have to be honest haven't seen all that many.

What are some Musicals you would recommend seeing?

I have only seen: Hairspray, Phantom of the Opera

I have good things, but was told to see the play not the movie, what are your thoughts?

If you can see the play in a decent or above theatre, then do that, with no doubt about it. The movie is okay enough, but if you really want to get in touch with the story, the theatre is the way to go.

Fun fact: I have personally been a part of setting up the play once.

Only musical that I can think of right now is Avenue Q. They play in the New World Stages.

If you're into more darker comedy musicals (these are my personal faves): Sweeney Todd, Heathers, Chicago
Modern comedy: Avenue Q, Book of Mormon
Standard (aka 'really amazing but almost everyone knows them'): Wicked, Les Miserables, Rent, Hamilton
Classics: Cats (mostly dancing and singing, not a lot of plot), Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, Carousal
