Use canva; there is a free and pro option.
So I suggest to start with a free option.
Or you can also use pexels, where you can download images in free and then can customise with the help of canva.

what i usually do is use photopea, its a free alternative to photoshop and it also has a lot of templates witch you can use and its really cool

I use photoshop. Make sure your thumbnail has all the necessary elements. For example, you made tutorial about making a strawberry ice cream. Click a high quality picture of ice cream with good lighting. And put that in a frame. Use some catchy high contract background. Use contrast text DIY Strawberry icecream. That's it. Dont put extra elements.

Use Canvas, I have doubled my views since I have started using it, as mentioned they have a free and pro but it is deff worth the price for more veiws
