YouTube Question Dealing With Negative Comments...

So, my most recent upload got a negative comment, saying: sounds like a bs story. The person gave me a thumbs down too. I took a deep breath and responded with: It's a fictional story. I don't post documentaries except in some shorts. I am sorry you didn't like the story. What horror/creepiest stories do you enjoy listening?

I thrive on constructive criticism, but with a comment like that I often struggle in how to take it. I am not sure whether the story just sucks, period, or if the viewer clicked and was expecting something else. Hence, the negative feedback.

When I clicked on the commenter's user name, their channel has 4 subscribers but millions of views. Which surprised me. Their content has nothing to do with my content, so it can't be competition (not that I am a threat to anyone). I click on people who comment because I feel I can learn from others. Even if they comment like the above. I figure, if the person is in my niche and they are successful, then I can study their posts to learn and grow.

I hope they will respond back so that I can at least judge what it was they didn't like: the story itself or just that they expected something different.

I work in mental health full time and I know the importance of staying diplomatic when facing negativity.

You did the right thing by taking a deep breath and staying calm; additionally, you wrote back a calm and well structured response. What I would say to do is maybe add a short second clip of you just saying if the story is fictional or not.. Whether the person believes the story is true or not is not your problem. You know if it's real or not, so don't let it bother you :)

That is freaking awesome! It's really great news honestly... and you don't even realize the value in getting this comment. This isn't constructive criticism... it's not even really a negative critique. It's flat out an erroneous post made by a troll in a bad mood who is hoping to knock you off your pedestal.

But that means you are on a pedestal.

Comments like this are a direct reflection of just how good you are. Great creators don't go through their entire YouTube journey without ridiculous, insulting and uneducated comments. Great creators are seen as a threat by non-creative types who don't understand the process. All they see is the result. They see a subscriber count or quality content and they feel a need to knock it down because it makes them feel inferior. They can't do what you do. These trolls don't go around looking for 1 and 2 subscriber channels so that they can make fun of the one video your seven-year old niece posted about her cat. They find the small creators who are making their way with the big dogs and they try to drag them back down to their level.

Troll comments are a badge of honor, they are a milestone equally as notable as any subscriber/view count achievement (and they are also positive engagement for your channel). Celebrate them. Enjoy the labor they put into stopping their day to write you a worthless message and do not give them a moment's thought in return. Also be ready; there are plenty more coming. And you should revel in that.

Block them. Delete them. You can easily tell when someone is just trying ruin your day. Don't even waste your time. Get them out of there.

Dealing with negative comments on YouTube can be challenging, but there are a few things you can do to manage and mitigate their impact:
  1. Respond professionally and empathetically: take the time to understand the nature of the negative comment and respond in a respectful and courteous manner.
  2. Hide or delete inappropriate comments: if the comment violates YouTube's community guidelines, you can hide or delete it to avoid drawing attention to it.
  3. Enable comment moderation: consider enabling comment moderation to review comments before they are posted on your videos.
  4. Don't engage in arguments or negative exchanges: avoid engaging in negative exchanges or arguments, as they can escalate and harm your reputation.
  5. Focus on positive engagement: instead of fixating on negative comments, focus on engaging positively with viewers who leave helpful or constructive feedback.
Please note that these are just some general tips and strategies. The best approach will depend on your specific situation and audience.
