YouTube Question Question about thumbnails and shorts

I'm just wondering, this may be an idiot question, but should I be creating thumbnails for my shorts just the same reason I do for long-form videos? I'm not asking about dimentions, I know they are different, but I am asking about if they really matter or not? I am asking because so many of the shorts that I see are just a random short that YouTube has picked yet the short gets tons of views!

Whether it's long form video or shorts it's up to you to decide which one is going to be best for your video(sometimes it's best to choose from the video to show what the viewer's can expect from the video). But for me I'll choose a screenshot from shorts or let Youtube do it. I don't make a separate thumbnail for it. Not many shorts are dispalyed on homepage, people see them as they swipe it so they don't get to see the thumbnail so I see it un necessary to do a separate thumbnail for it.
