You are talking about two different traffic sources... Search and Suggested. You can't really do much to affect your performance in Suggested; a killer thumbnail and solid watch time are going to get you there but you are going to need it to be REALLY good to compete against the other suggested videos. Search is a little different. You can actually optimize for search traffic. Research the specific keywords that have more traffic volume but less competition, optimize your video for these terms and even the smallest channels can rank and get views based on the information that viewers are searching for.
As an aside; while optimizing in and of itself does nothing to affect Suggested traffic performing well for Search traffic can garner you more suggested impressions as YouTube tries to test out your video for different demographics.
