I want to ask, is it a mistake to make youtube thumbnails using photos obtained from google? if i edit the photo is it still a problem by youtube?

Where you get the photo isn't the issue. The issue is whether or not the copyright owner allows you to use it and if they do under what conditions. Some require attribution, some don't care.

You are better off using a site that has good license management more than using photos from Google.
