I started getting paid before I uploaded my first video. I started a business outside of YouTube, then but my business onYouTube. That way I was getting paid before day one.
@Damon has the best answer here, far and away. Everyone focuses on getting paid for ads on their videos (which requires you to have 1,000 subscribers, 4,000 hours of watchtime on public videos and tons of views). The reality is that Adsense is nonsense. That should be considered as nothing more than a bonus.
YouTube provides you with a platform that hosts your files for free, it allows you to give content to a community. But the real money... and I do mean the real money doesn't come from monetizing your content. It comes from what you can provide in value to that audience. And that value has zero monetizeable requirements. You come up with a service or product that is undeniable then it will sell. You simply need YouTube to spread the word via your videos.
If you just want to make a couple of bucks per year with a few videos there is nothing wrong with that. But understand that if you are relying on Adsense that money is fickle, it is out of your control and it is miniscule.
