Moved this to a more appropriate section.

Note - this is a frequent question and has been covered on the TubeBuddy channel. You can find that channel here:

Here's my search traffic impressions. For this video I changed my keywords in 2018, then crafted even better ranking keywords (tags) in 2020, and the blue spike in search traffic shows I got 130,000 views coming from search. I didn't change the title of the video, ONLY TAGS were changed.

Some say you shouldn't rely on search traffic, but if you don't include search as an option, you're leaving potential views on the floor. The graphs and data don't lie, as "unimportant" as youtube and others are trying to make tags out to be.

How do you find your tags?
Obviously I used the TubeBuddy research tools. And then I think to myself "if I was looking for this video, what type of search terms would I type in?"
I type in a range of combinations and styles. For example, I do a lot of dinosaur drawing tutorials. If I was to release a video on drawing a t rex head... there's several ways of spennling t rex

I'd go "how to draw a t rex head" "how to draw a tyrannosaurus head" "drawing a tyrannosaurus head" "tyrannosaurus head drawing" "tyrannosaurus head drawing tutorial" I'm not sure if the order of words matters, but sometimes when I'm looking for something, I might put the words in a mixture of ways.

King Kong vs Godzilla are 2 characters. Realistically it shouldn't matter how you type it in, because it's still hitting both characters, but I still go "king kong vs godzilla" "godzilla vs king kong" "godzilla vs kong" and all other sorts of variations of it.

You only get ONE option for the title, but you have 500 characters to work with for tags, so you have a range of options to work with. Sometimes it does take some creative thinking, and the tubebuddy keyword tools help give you even more ideas on what you can choose, and just how popular and competitive those terms are.

They say tags don't matter, but I like having higher impressions in search than low impressions, because every impression, no matter how small, is another opportunity to be found and clicked.

Tags do nothing to help the video to get views! KEYWORD in title and description and saying those KEYWORD or TITLE in your video help the Algorithm to understand what your video is about so it can show the right video to the right viewer!

I would welcome your source for this since it directly contradicts what YouTube continually says and it was mentioned in several of the recent Search and Discovery videos on Creator Insider. Point us to where YouTube has said this is the case?

This is very helpful! My favorite thing is to see my keyword showing up as #1 in the search! That is when you know you got a winner!

You are making the point for me. People make blanket statements "tag do nothing..." when they still serve a semantic purpose that IS very useful. While they talk "misspelling" it is actually any semantic relationship. Machine Learning is poor at semantic relationships and the more help and hints you provide, the better off you are. You should absolutely still make sure you are covering common misspellings, etc. as those details DO impact views.

Tags use has changed, but to say they don't matter is incorrect.

This is what Creator Insider claims, but my videos with tags get far better search results.

Okay, there is a flaw in his argument. He is only looking at the first hour. That first hour or even week is highly dependent on the size your current audience. The whole point of tags and SEO is long-term relevance. Most of my videos don't hit until two sometimes three years down the road. You can't tell me tags don't matter when looking at my data the tags over the past seven years is the number on way people have found my videos.

The reality is no one can really tell you how to build your YouTube channel. The reality is tags may not matter to him, but he has a niche that is hot and an age group that that most likely finds him through other means. My niche is slow, very seasonal, and I have a much older age group. Tags have been about the only reason people find me. When you're popular, you don't need tags. For the rest of us . . .

In fact a fellow just e-mailed me mentioning he found my channel because he was looking for fishing on Deerlick Creek , a fairly little known creek on a major lake in my area. The only reason he found me was that I had SEO Deerlick creek about a year ago a video called the Deerlick Creek Expedition.

In honestly I have not watch the entire video, but straight off the bat he is issuing a blanket statement for everyone based on his own experience which is not the entirely of the universe. The only way to know if tags/SEO works is if you try it for yourself and make decisions off your own data. And you need to monitor that data over longer enough time frames--years not minutes--to get a true sense of what is going on.

Another flaw: He does have "tags." The title of his video is an SEO keyword phrase. He simply used the title as his tag. Even though he doesn't have "tag," he does have the SEO from a highly searched keyword phrase, in a hot niche, and all in an age group YouTube prefers to target. As we have said many times, I isn't about the tags, it's about the overall keyword phrasing in your title, description and tags that matter.

To isolate something like tags out of context is very concerning if you are a new YouTuber trying to make it. A guy with 15k subs in a hot niche, favored age group using a highly searched keyword phrase won't need "tags." But, he does need SEO. If you have a very narrow, obscure niche and are just starting out, going without tags, then you watch a video of a guy in a fundamentally different circumstance preach about no tags, and you expect the same result not even having 1k subs, I guarantee you your results will be different.

Life Lesson: There is what the person is saying, then there is what they are doing. Did he proceed to delete all tags and all SEO from his titles and description for all videos past, present and future? If not, then, his statement is flawed, conditional in that it only isolates an indecent particular to his niche and audience for that one time. You have to look at the entire context. That's something no one seems to be able to do these days.
