Hey Everyone!

I see @SILTHW being bought out by BIG DAVINCI [JOKES, he just likes it]

What are your thoughts about it as an editor? have you used it?

I like that it's free to start, and is very useful to color, but I keep finding myself preferring Adobe's CC since I use it all.

What are your thoughts?

Let's look at it from a workflow and cost perspective.

Media Management:
Davinci has some features that make it better for multicam, but there is little real difference between FCP, Premier and Davinci. It is really preferences.

Editing:
Same across the board.

Compositing:
After Effects is easily the best. But Davinci is a strong second and FCP/Motion has fallen to 3rd. Davinci's strength is in its AI. AE's is in sfx. Motion is jack of all trades.

Color:
Davinci has long been the industry standard for color. They are by far the best. To get close in FCP or Premiere you need a plug-in.

Sound:
Audition (Adobe) is a solid. Logic (Apple) benefits from some excellent plug-ins. Fairlight has been the industry standard for motion picture sound for a long time. Because Fairlight is so tightly-coupled, it has very nice ADR and video-centric features. Fairlight isn't as much of a "digital audio workstation" (DAW) as the other two. All support VSTs, so that's a wash.

Encoding:
Pretty much the same. Apple used to have better distributed rendering, but advances in GPU have made that not as critical.

Hardware:
- Adobe - No Adobe-built hardware. Lots of 3rd party.
- Apple - No Apple-built hardware. Lots of 3rd party.
- Davinci - Umm.... DaVinci Resolve 17 ΓÇô Panels | Blackmagic Design

Workflow:
- Apple - You need FCP ($299USD), Motion ($49USD) and Logic ($199USD) to give you what you get in Davinci Resolve Studio. You will need to move between apps.
- Adobe - You need Premiere, After Effects and Audition for $52.99 a month perpetually to get what you get in Davinci Resolve Studio. You will need to move between apps.
- Davinci - $299. And if you buy a Davinci Resolve Studio 17 license right now you get a free speed editor. And you do all the work in one app.

I'm skipping all the ProRES versus Davinci RAW stuff because there is only a small audience that really cares about that but working with 6k RAW files without proxies in Davnci is amazing.

In the end, for me it is the price and what you get for that price that has me hooked on Davinci.

I'm still yet to wrap my head around fairlight or the concept of nodes, but if you computer can run it, you'd be a fool not to try it out seems it's free and super powerful. I quite like how intuitive it's pan zoom and cropping features are. I do wish it's ui was more customisable and that taking snapshots was easier.

If by snapshots you mean still caps, it is admittedly very counterintuitive to have to do it in Color, but if you understand the history of the product it makes a bit more sense as to why they left it there versus moving it or duplicating it elsewhere.

Yeah, I like how premiere pro has the stills cap icon right in the main menu. Ideally I'd love something like vlc player where you have a shortcut key that you can just press whenever you want to get a screen grab.

I think that's where Premiere has done a good job of targeting a broader market. It is certainly a feature that is very useful for getting clean images for thumbnails, etc. Since Davinci is still really targeting pros, the main reason pros use stills is for color grading so it lives there. I have definitely wanted to grab a still from the edit screen, so I appreciate that it would be a nice addition.

If I am nit-picking, I would add that I like how marker work better in FCP and Premiere.

Love it!

I finally received my paid licence key the other day (and free Speed Editor which I haven't even opened yet) as I feel the price is very fair for what you are getting, and the lifetime licence is nice.

The main thing I have noticed so far is the performance boost on the paid version. All the footage I work with is H264 which is better supported in the paid version, so editing is much smoother and exports are way faster as well.

Before and After, same video on free version then re-export in paid version using the Nvidia export option (RTX2070Super):

For free software, I really like DR, I stumbled upon it when movie maker just wasn't cutting it, I wanted to step up my editing game and DR is nice because you can use it for simple function....but then if you take the time to learn, you can get some really nice and fascinating results.

I have been using Davinci for a couple of years now and I love it. It gives me everything I could ever want both as a creator and as a film editor for various organizations I volunteer at. I have set it up with my faderport and also using touch portal in conjunction with the Davinci Pro Profiles from SideshowFX. Still learning how to use all this stuff but I am definitely loving it. Fusion is also great as it allows you to create all kinds of different effects and animations. I am finding that I am getting faster as creating videos now because of all this. Still a long ways from saying I am proficient though. LOL

I am currently not using it but that software suite is great. It,s just perfect the cut page for the rough cut, the edit for the final video edit with some sound editing, the Fairlight page for God-Tier sound editing, the Fusion page for node-based compositing, the color page for God-Tier industry-standard color correction, and a pretty good encoder. The hardware is also very good. The color correction control surfaces as well as the Fairlight desktop console are some cool-looking gadgets if you can get your hands on them.
The only down I had whilst using it was the lack of REMIX option like in adobe audition.

Best thing is that it comes completely free with all the options a video editor looks for. It has advance features and the video engine is really powerful. I love the color grading options of Divinci resolve.

DaVinci Resolve is a powerful and versatile editing software, renowned for its advanced color grading capabilities and robust editing tools. It's a great choice for both professional and amateur editors looking for comprehensive post-production features. https://verna-haywood.com/ Verna has been through a very turbulent life; she was fighting to come out of an abusive relationship while she was living in the Caribbean and relocated to the UK.
