I'd also watch some graphic design tutorials. It's not just about how to make a thumbnail, but also understanding graphic design principles like contrast, heirachy and color theory. Color theaory and contrast alone will help you understand the importance of making a clean, simple, easy to read thumbnail :)

I think learning graphic design as a topic, will help you overall in all walks of creation. Learning graphic design can help you with your channel banner, it can help you understand web design, and even merchandise when you're at that stage. Graphic design is literally everywhere and is a driving force behind good thumbnails :)

Oh, and Nick Nimmin has a background in graphic design. type in "nick nimmin thumbnail" into YouTube and you'll find a bunch of his thumbnail tutorials. Roberto Black has a background in design as well, not entirely sure if he's done any thumbnail tutorials, but you can certainly search his channel :)
